Breakthrough Urban Ministries is a Christian organization that serves East Garfield Park in the city of Chicago. They provide neighborhood-based holistic services that empower individuals, families, and urban communities to overcome poverty, addiction, and isolation. They have a men's and a women's shelter for the homeless. Breakthrough also has youth and family programs. They provide comprehensive services: from daily meals to job counseling to Bible studies.

Manna Ministry - The primary opportunity is the Manna Meals Ministry. You would provide, prepare, and serve a meal at the men's or women's shelter. You also get a chance to eat and talk with the residents.
Greater Chicago Food Depository - Another way to serve is to help out at the Greater Chicago Food Depository sorting foods. They will log your hours under Breakthrough's "food account" to earn them more food donations.
Sports Coaches – Volunteering as a coach with the youth sports leagues would be a great way to build relationships and have fun. This requires more commitment, and depending on the sports season, lasts 1-3 months, about twice a week.
